About Scrap Exchange

Most households and small shops sell their scrap to whoever comes to the door, without knowing the going rate. Dealers spend hours looking for stock, and a lot of recyclable material is thrown away instead of being reused.

• Photo estimate: a picture of your scrap is enough to see the material and what it is worth today, per kg.
• Marketplace and auctions: listings with filters by material, price and distance, saved searches, and timed auctions with live bids.
• Offers, chat and pickups: agree a price, chat with photos and voice notes, book a pickup, track the buyer and confirm the weight together.
• Earnings and trust: receipts for every deal, statements, ratings, badges and a dispute process.
• Learning community: tutorials, questions and answers, stories and recycling events.
• Pro tools: bulk listing, price alerts, a dealer network, a pickup planner and business analytics.
• Guardian portal: an admin website where staff review reports, disputes and app releases.

An Android app (Kotlin and Jetpack Compose), a web app and an admin portal (Next.js and React), and an API (Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL and Redis) with live updates over WebSockets. A computer vision service recognises scrap materials from photos. Everything is tested automatically and deployed on every change.

Scrap Exchange is the final year project of three students of the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), Islamabad, under the supervision of Mr. MN Khokhar.
