Raddi and gatta: selling old paper and cardboard

Newspaper, books, office paper and cardboard each sell at a different rate. How to sort, store and sell them for more.

Raddi (old paper) and gatta (cardboard) are the most common household scrap in Pakistan. They are sold by the kilogram, so small improvements add up.

Sort into these piles

  • Newspaper (akhbar): the classic raddi.
  • Books and notebooks: remove plastic covers and spiral bindings.
  • White office paper: often priced above newspaper.
  • Cardboard (gatta): flattened boxes and cartons.

Keep it dry

Damp paper weighs more, and buyers know it: they will cut the price or the weight. Store raddi off the floor and away from the kitchen and bathroom.

Protect your privacy

Remove or shred bank statements, letters, school records and anything with your CNIC number before you sell.
