Grades

What decides the price of copper scrap

  • Bright wire (Millberry)

Stripped, shiny, unburnt wire. The top grade.

  • Pipe and sheet

Clean plumbing pipe and sheet without solder or fittings.

  • Mixed copper

Some solder, paint or oxidation. Priced a step lower.

  • Burnt wire

Insulation burnt off. Brittle and darker, so it sells for less.

  • Insulated cable and motor winding

Priced by the copper inside, after the plastic or iron is removed.

Tips for a better price

  • Strip insulation yourself only if it is safe to do so. Never burn cable: it lowers the price and the smoke is toxic.
  • Keep copper separate from brass and aluminium. Mixed bags are priced at the lowest metal in them.
  • Photograph a cut end of thick cable so buyers can see it is copper, not copper-coated aluminium.

Common copper scrap: house rewiring cable, AC copper pipe and coils, motor windings, plumbing pipe.
