How we calculate scrap rates

Many rate lists online are weeks old or copied from other countries. Ours are dated, say where every number comes from, and sit beside what real deals on Scrap Exchange show.

Where each rate comes from

For each material and place, the headline price is the first of these that is available:

  1. Market rate. A range our team publishes for clean, sorted material, checked against named sources such as dealer and broker rates in the main scrap markets. It shows the date it was set and its source. Every change is kept, so you can compare today's rate with last month and last year.
  2. Completed deals. The median price per kg of deals completed on Scrap Exchange in the last 30 days, after the buyer and seller weighed the scrap and agreed the final price. We only publish this when at least three deals back it, so no single person's price can be worked out.
  3. Asking prices. The median price per kg of current listings. Asking prices are what sellers hope to get, so they can be above what buyers pay.
  4. Guide range. When none of the above exists yet, the middle of a typical range for clean, sorted material.

When a market rate is the headline, our tables also show what deals or listings on Scrap Exchange say, in the "On Scrap Exchange" column, so you can see both.

Places

The Pakistan table uses activity from the whole country. A city table uses activity within 30 km of the city centre. Exact locations are never published.

Change and history

For market rates, the change compares today's rate with the rate in force 30 days earlier, and each material page charts the rate at the end of every month for the last two years. For deal medians, the change is shown only when enough deals back both periods.

Updates

Rates are recalculated every few minutes. Every page shows the time it was last updated, in Pakistan time.

What the rate is not

A rate is a guide, not an offer. What you are paid depends on the grade, how clean and sorted the scrap is, and its weight on the day. On Scrap Exchange, several buyers can make offers, and you agree the final price after weighing. See our price disclaimer.
